Racing at Mahoning Valley takes place over the Autumn and Winter months so you are generally looking at races running from October to April. Right now races run during the week on Monday to Thursday and Saturday on the weekend. Monday and Sunday are rest days, no racing. The track has a one-mile outer oval dirt track and a seven-furlong inner turf course, you’re looking at a seating capacity of over 6,000. There are a few big races that take place at Mahoning Valley each year:-
The Valley View Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually, it is a race for 3-year-old fillies and is run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on the inside turf course. It’s a Stakes race so that means that it offers a higher purse than a regular race and is considered to be a more prestigious event. The race is typically held in late October or early November and gets the race season of to a great start. It is one of the major races for 3-year-old fillies in the region. Past winners of the Valley View Stakes have gone on to have successful careers, including some who have competed in major races such as the Kentucky Oaks and the Breeders’ Cup. The Valley View Stakes is considered to be an important race for Thoroughbred horse racing in the Midwestern United States and is one of the big highlights of the racing season at Mahoning Valley race course.
You’ve also got the Betty Grable Stakes, a Thoroughbred horse race held annually at the valley, it’s a race for fillies and mares aged three years and older and is run over a distance of 6 furlongs on the outer dirt track. Stakes again so a higher purse is in play than for most races. The Betty Grable is a big event around Christmas and New Year and a big favourite for those visiting over the holiday period.
On top of the horse racing at Mahoning Valley (which is of course the main attraction) there is also plenty of other things to do if you’re making a visit. There are loads of food and drink venues on site, a full blown Casino and not to mention that the course itself in places in some very pretty countryside. The views alone make a visit in person worth the effort if you’re passing by that way.
